You've a right to switch energy, even if you rent

Don't think just because you rent your property you can't switch supplier. Here's the low down:

  • Pay the energy company directly? You CAN switch supplier
    As you have a contract directly with the energy supplier, you don't need to get permission from your landlord to switch. Still let them know in writing so they're aware.
  • Pay your landlord for energy? Ask if they'll switch
    It's still worth talking to your landlord to see if they'll switch to a cheaper supplier - after all, they'll get to pay less on energy bills too.

    However, your options are limited to just asking, because the landlord is the account holder. Put simply, the account holder is the only person with the right to switch.
  • My tenancy agreement says I can't switch, help!
    If your tenancy agreement says you can't switch, challenge it. First discuss it with your landlord. Preventing you from changing energy suppliers may be viewed as an unfair term in a tenancy agreement. So if they refuse get in touch with Citizens Advice for help.

Energy suppliers won't let us switch you from a prepay meter to a standard meter (where you get a bill), or vice versa. If you want to change you will need to speak to your supplier directly (see our Prepay guide for help on how to do it for free).
